Crowd-Sourced Botany
1/7/2019
As a botanist at the New York Botanical Garden, Daniel Atha had travelled all over the world to study plants in their native habitats. Then, one day, it occurred to him that he knew more about the plants of Belize than those of New York, the city he calls home. That has changed. Since the beginning of 2017, Atha has, in combination with NYBG's Vice President for Conservation Strategy Dr. Brian Boom, been co-managing a unique focus on the flora of New York's five boroughs. Called “New York City EcoFlora,” this project is not only educating the Botanical Garden's scientists about the city's natural resources, but also a host of “citizen scientists” as well. The concept is that volunteering New Yorkers agree to photograph wild plants they observe around the cityscape and upload the photographs using the iNaturalist platform sponsored by the California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic Society. With each photograph, the time and the place of the observation is recorded. The identification of the specimen is crowd-sourced to the whole iNaturalistcommunity, which includes interested botanical specialists all over the United States and abroad. Atha cites as an example of how this works the recent spotting of a weed in a planter bed by a Lower East Side volunteer who was visiting her mother on the Upper West Side. An authority on spurges in west Texas identified the plant in the photograph as Euphorbia hypericifolia, a plant that had never before been observed growing wild in New York. Armed with this information, Atha himself found another population growing spontaneously under a fence on the Botanical Garden grounds. This suggests that this former unknown is naturalized in New York, and so a part now of its flora. To keep cooperators interested, Boom and Atha post every month on the EcoFlora website a different “EcoQuest Challenge.” The response can be impressive. The October 2018 Challenge, for example, called for sightings of the fall wildflower white snakeroot (Ageratina altissima). This brought a flood of some 16,000 photographs. With the help of 3,541 citizen scientists, EcoFlora has in two years' focus on the city (2017-2018) recorded observations of 3,180 different species of plants, fungi and lichens. Given all the disturbance this area has experienced, a surprisingly large proportion of its flora remains native – roughly 65 percent. But the identification of non-native “exotics” by the citizen scientists is useful as well, providing data about invasive plants that can contribute to their deterrence. Any sightings of rarities in the city parks, meanwhile, the Botanical Garden shares with the NYC Parks Department, to ensure these plant protection and preservation. Taken together, these different kinds of data also have an obvious relevance to land-use planning. “You have to know what's out there,” notes Atha, “to make wise decisions.” Currently, Boom and Atha are applying for a grant to help them spread the concept of EcoFlora to other communities. One avenue they are exploring is to share this model with botanical gardens in other areas of the country. If they succeed, citizen science and crowd-sourced botany may soon be coming to a location near you. Crowd-Sourced Botany originally appeared on GardenRant on January 7, 2019.

Farmers' Almanac Predicts a Cold & White Winter for New EnglandThe Farmers' Almanac, that time-tested and generation-approved compendium of knowledge, has a rough prediction for the 2018-2019 New England winter: teeth-chattering cold lies ahead. “Contrary to the stories storming the web, our time-tested, long-range formula is pointing toward a very long, cold, and snow-filled winter. We stand by our forecast and formula, which accurately predicted the many storms last winter, as well as this summer's steamy, hot conditions.” Farmers' Almanac Editor Peter Geiger said.
And he's right. Last winter the Geiger team predicted nearly every major storm we had. “We're actually calling for teeth-chattering cold,” said Geiger managing editor Sandi Duncan. “It's going to be cold and it's going to be snowy. We're summarizing it as 'cold and wet' and the interesting thing is, it looks like winter might start a little bit early. We have some winter storms predicted early on.” Modern's Expert OpinionsThe Farmer's Almanac is the go-to resource for weather. And Modern Pest's team of Associate Certified Entomologists (A.C.E) are who you ask when pests are the issue. We spoke with Modern's Training Manager Mike Peaslee, A.C.E., and Training Specialists Paul Lavallee, A.C.E. and Joe Hyland, A.C.E. to get their opinions on how winter affects pest pressures. How Does Winter Weather Affect Pests? They all agree that the main factor is the combination of weather. That will determine pest pressures more than any one thing. “There are variables that will affect how the winter will impact pests that we deal with. A cold snowy winter isn't necessarily a bad thing for insects,” Mike Peaslee said. “A lot depends on how quickly it gets cold, when we get the snow, etc.” “When we think in terms of winter killing off pests, you have cold and snow. Snow does not necessarily prevent rodents, especially mice, from entering a home. There is a lot of historical evidence of mice tunneling under a snowpack in someone's yard,” Joe Hyland said. “Rodents and insect pests will look to come inside if it's 32 degrees or -10 degrees,” Paul Lavallee added. “The biggest impact I have seen from winter weather is when we get extreme variations in temperatures in a very short time,” Mike Peaslee said. When winter is extremely cold, but not snowyWhen it's very cold with temperatures below zero for long periods of time and there isn't much snow, the cold can start to kill off some eggs and hibernating adult arthropods (such as ticks, mosquitoes, and ants). “Ideally, a very cold winter, with little snow, will have some impact on the numbers of pests that survive to hatch or 'wake up' in the spring,” Joe Hyland said. “If we have a light snow year and cold temps, more ticks will die from exposure,” Paul Lavallee added.
When winter is extremely cold, AND snowyWhen it's extremely cold and very snowy, the snow can insulate ticks and other pests from the brutal air temperatures. It acts as a protective blanket. “The Almanac prediction will probably benefit pests,” Joe Hyland said. “Additionally, a heavy snow cover, as it melts in spring, provides a lot of moisture for some of these pests to thrive. I always viewed a big snow melt, followed by a warm spring and summer, as a bumper crop for ants and other insects.” A snowy winter that results in a wet spring can also provide a large crop of grasses and seeds that rodents feed upon while mating. This can lead to increased rodent activity the following autumn. When winter is not that cold, but snowyAs stated before, snow can act as a protective blanket for pests. When it's very snowy but not that cold, pests and their overwintering sites will be insulated by the snow. This will increase the number of pests that will survive the winter. “A cold, snowy winter can actually be beneficial to insects as long as it doesn't become brutally cold, with temps below zero for extended periods of time prior to snowfall,” Mike Peaslee said. Design 2019 is upon us and this is the time of year that we like to look around and decide what to leave behind to make room for new beginnings. So naturally, the interior design of our homes and businesses is part of this process.
This year there is an array of creative excitement in architectural arches, darker wood, and eco-chic choices by international designers. But, that's not all, so read on to see what designers predict for design 2019. 12 Trends for Interior Design 2019Trend 1 • Architectural ArchesArches are a pleasant transition from one room to the next which is only one reason why they are a current architectural trend. They also create a luxurious classical atmosphere and add exceptional character to your modern home design. I am also impressed with the way their round soft curves create a tranquil work of art out of a simple passageway. Trend 2 • Bold Beachy ColorsI love Pantone's Color of the Year “Living Coral”! This color is an absolute joy and will enliven any room but looks especially at home in this beach house. Pair it with other pastels or jazz it up with complimentary accessories all around. Trend 3 • Creamy Pastel ColorsCombine the earthy elements of concrete or wood with these soft yet glowing ice-cream colors to get a space with a heavenly effervescence. This year's pastels fit nicely with most decors and are easily complemented by terracotta or emerald green. You may consider these colors as the new neutrals for design 2019. Trend 4 • Earthy Natural ColorsIf you want natural elements throughout your home, consider decorating in colors like this kitchen shown in Sherwin-Williams “Cavern Clay” 2019 color of the year. These colors are mediums through which you may dress up your home with sophistication or bring it right down to earth. Trend 5 • Eco-Chic LivingSustainable furniture design continues to expand and grow in popularity among designers. You will see more of this style in 2019 as designers explore increased possibilities of recycled materials in their creations. Shown here is the work of Kim Markel whose delightful, earth-friendly Glow Chairs are made of recycled plastic. Trend 6 • Gallons of GreeneryLiving plants instantly add inexpensive color and luxurious, organic texture to any decor. Plants not only look great with most interiors, but they also purify and keep the air healthy. As designers become more and more conscious of the importance of bringing the outside in, look for lots of greenery in design 2019 because clean air is something we all need. Trend 7 • Headboards of GrandeurBig headboards make a grand statement as you enter a bedroom. The nice part is, you won't need to decorate as much space so it is an easy way to bring your bedroom up to a new level. Use soft colors and textures such as a fabric that is silky to the touch in a neutral blush to create an atmosphere of serenity. Trend 8 • Japandi StyleWhen this rustic Scandinavian style melds with the traditional elegance we all expect from the Japanese style, it equals minimalism with extraordinary lines, textures, and earthbound colors. Moreover, this modernistic style is still going strong in 2019. Trend 9 • Modern Mediterranean StyleWe hear a lot of buzz among designers around updating the old and bringing in the new for 2019. This is no more evident than with the modern Mediterranean style with its expected classic features plus the addition of elegant contemporary design. Trend 10 • Metallics as AccentsMetals are in and it isn't limited to a particular tone. Use them together or use one tone across an entire room. The spectacular gold multi-layer round chandelier shines over a round glass table with a gold-toned metal base. Metallics are inherently glamorous in any setting and this one tops the charts! Trend 11 • Rugs as Statement Wall ArtAn eclectic yet modern statement that's now trending is when you put your rug on the wall as a striking statement of art. So, before you put that new area rug down on the floor, try it on the wall first to see how it feels. It might just be the coup de gras of your interior design for 2019. Trend 12 • Warmer Darker WoodA deeper, darker shade of wood is seen not only in the kitchen but the living room and bathroom as well. Interior design 2019 brings out the warmth of luxurious wood paired with textured wallpaper for layers of organic elements across the spectrum of your design. In particular, black oak is a strong trend not only for its natural beauty but also for its incredible warmth. Additionally, it gives us a feeling of being grounded which is a very nice effect for you, your family, and guests. Please note that if you opt for a wood basin in your bathroom such as the beauty shown below, ensure that it is sealed properly with a waterproof silicone to prevent mold and keep its finish intact for a longer period of use. This is a lot of information but understand that this is only the beginning of the 2019 trends! Stay tuned for upcoming posts that goe into more depth about what to look for when you want to update your surroundings to one or a few of the latest interior design alternatives and trends for your home or office. QUIZ: 9 Alcohol Cheats in Animation
1/7/2019
But times have been changing for a while. Nowadays, it's very rare that you'll see any alcohol references in children's animation. BUT! When they weren't allowed to show alcohol, writers and animators have cleverly tried to cheat the filters by simply replacing it with something else, so they could still show comical drunkenness, bar scenes, or savage hangovers. Let's see if you can guess which “kid-friendly” substitutes these cartoons used. Even if you completely strike out on all 9, it's pretty interesting! What Was Used Instead of Alcohol? 1) The Secret Life of Pets (2016)Illumination Entertainment SAUSAGES 2) Adventure Time (2014)Cartoon Network CUCUMBER WATER 3) Phineas and Ferb (2008)Disney Channel MILKSHAKES 4) The Legend of Korra (2014)Nickelodeon NOODLES 5) All Hail King Julien (2016)DreamWorks Animation Television COCONUT MILK 6) Chip N' Dale's Rescue Rangers (1989)Disney Television Animation ROTTEN FRUIT 7) SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004)Nickelodeon Movies ICE CREAM 8) Transformers (1985)Hasbro Studios ENERGY 9) My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (2018)Hasbro Studios CIDER QUIZ: Alcohol Cheats in Animation You didn't do so well, but the answers are interesting, right? We all may have varying opinions on that, but we can probably ALL agree that cartoons aren't always the best teachers. Apparently, it's okay to animate someone comically misusing Talk to your kids early about responsible drinking, okay? Earlier than you probably think you'll need to. The world is already teaching them more than you know. – Thanks to Responsibiliy.org for sponsoring this post. Working with them has opened my eyes much wider to the importance of parents consciously working to stay engaged with their kids, and not just about school or Pokémon or the latest Pixar movie, but especially to have meaningful conversations about often overlooked topics like responsible drinking. As well as all the obvious bigger life stuff they'll need to have a good head on their shoulders about. Like wearing socks and sandals. Ugh. On average, people spend 26.3 years out of their lives sleeping or in bed. Making sure you're comfortable in your bed should be a no-brainer. Typically we should be replacing our mattresses every 8 years, but why is it that some of us never get new mattresses? Maybe it's budget, maybe it's the fear of change. However, there are some tell tale signs that it's time to upgrade to a new mattress. Let's explore them today. When did you buy your current one?As we previously stated, mattresses should be swapped at least once every 8 years, but this isn't set in stone. You may have to pick up a new one earlier if you notice a decline in your quality of sleep or if you are waking up with general soreness. If you go more than 3 or 4 days with the same body part aching in the morning, then it's time to visit the mattress store. Is your current mattress comfortable?
Do you have unwelcome guests inside the mattress?Think of your mattress like a sponge. When you go to bed, your mattress gradually absorbs all of your sweat and dead skin. Tiny critters like dust mites and bedbugs can potentially move in and feed off of this organic material that settles into your mattress and box spring. While dust mites are mostly harmless, bedbugs are a major concern. You'll need to make sure they're fully gone before shopping for a new mattress. Do you toss and turn all night?General restlessness and fatigue can be directly attributed to the quality of your bed and mattress. Sometimes it takes longer to fall asleep than other nights, but if it takes you an hour or more to fall asleep or to find the best resting position, then it is time for a change. Also, make sure to pay attention to your spouse's sleeping habits. They may not mention it to you but they may be struggling through their night's rest as well. I'm sure they'll appreciate having a fresh bed to sleep on instead. What color is it?As was previously mentioned, your mattress absorbs all of your sweat and dead skin (among other things, for those of us that eat or drink in bed). Over time, your mattress may become discolored because of this. The color of your mattress is a great indicator of its lifespan. Generally speaking, if your mattress is more coffee colored than white, then it has to go. If you are unhappy with how you've been sleeping lately, then definitely consider going shopping for a new mattress. Hopefully these tips have given you some pointers on what to look for when it's time for a change. The post How to Tell It's Time for a New Mattress appeared first on King of Maids Blog. It's easy to find a bathroom in disarray, after all it's one of the smallest rooms in the house that's also used by everyone and guests. Thankfully, there are some bathroom organization ideas that can help shape up your small space! “People are stuck with a lot of clutter and disorganization going on in their bathroom, because they're in and out fast and don't take the time to put things away,” said Susan Stone, a professional organizer in New England. If you're ready to create an organization system to keep your bathroom clutter at bay, keep reading for some great bathroom organization ideas from Stone and another professional organizer! Your space and morning routine will be in order in no time. Only Store Everyday Essentials in a BathroomIf there are items you don't use every day – such as cold medicine or 20 rolls of toilet paper – then it should be stored in a linen closet or storage space outside the bathroom, said Sara Barba of XOXOrganizing. “In any bathroom in a regular-size home, you don't have a ton of space,” she said. “If you go and buy in bulk, I always say don't keep everything in your bathroom. That's going to take a lot of space and it's going to take months to get through all that shampoo, or whatever it is.” If you have a lot of hair products or makeup, only store what you need to get ready the next day. “Maybe just pare it down to what you're actually using,” said Barba. “I have so many hair products for my curly hair and then I have some for when I'm in my straight hair faze. Take the products that you're not using and store them somewhere else until you're ready to use them again.” Bathroom Organization Ideas: Utilize Vertical SpaceInstead of cramping the space under the sink with towels and bathroom necessities, or your bathroom floor with more cabinets, consider adding shelves or hooks on walls or doors to free up storage space. “Hang shelves on walls, or baskets and hooks over the door,” said Stone. “Think vertically, because bathrooms are often space-challenged.” She also suggests adding hooks to the inside of cabinet doors for curling irons or blow dryers, because hanging those items will free up storage space elsewhere. “This reduces the visible clutter on the back of sinks and toilet tanks,” she said. But before you go to the store and buy storage bins, shelves or other bathroom organization supplies, make sure you make room for them by removing what you don't need in your bathroom. “Bins are adding more stuff, and if you're constantly adding stuff your bathroom will start to look really messy,” Barba said. “Make sure you subtract things from your bathroom before you start adding new things.” Reorganize a Bathroom SeasonallyDuring your fall or spring cleaning routines, go through you bathroom and toss expired products, switch out seasonal necessities and toss old linens, said Stone. “You should go through your bathroom once a season, because you'll want to switch out moisturizers in the winter with sunblock in the summer,” she said. “Twice a year, when you're switching out your wardrobe, you should also consider your bathroom products.” This includes getting rid of items you never used – like a shade of lipstick that you hoped would look good, but never did. Or shampoo brands that you were excited to try, but just didn't work out. “Your space is really special, and it should only hold the things you also consider special,” said Stone.
