That smooth, newly repainted look depends on having a smooth, prepared surface to start from. Here are some situations in which old paint needs to be stripped off:

You will find the switch to connected to your particular junction box in the breaker box of your house. Power this off to stay safe on the job.
Step two – Dismantle the Junction box
In our example, our technician marks each pair of electrical wires with colored tape and numbers them with a permanent marker to keep track of them. The technician also labels the switches that correspond to those wires. This will organization will make things easier when you have to reattach these wires to the new electrical box.
At the house exterior or in your attic, you will need to find the junction box that is the source of the wires. In our example, the electrical wires (or romex wires) went through the hole that was drilled through the top plate or header beam.
When you have determined the new position of the surface mounted multi-gang electrical box, install the metal conduit first, drilling any new holes that are needed through the studs for the installation. Then install the frame junction box to the pipes of the conduit so that you have something to attach to. After unbunching the wires that you put through the conduit, take wire strippers and strip the casing from the wires. If you labeled everything in the beginning, you can match the wires to the corresponding switches. With all of the switches in place, replace the switch cover. Turn the power back on from the breaker box and the transition is complete! The post How to Move a Surface Mounted Electrical Box appeared first on Best Online Cabinets. As the temperatures continue to fall, daylight hours get shorter, and the final leaves begin to fall off the trees. One might think this marks the end to another season in the landscape. In one aspect, this is correct; the growing season is over. But, there is still much you should do to the landscape to prepare it for the stresses of Winter. Here's 4 Winter landscaping tips from a pro. Winter Landscaping Tip #1 – Dormant Season PruningPruning of your trees and shrubs during the growing season, in most cases, is a must. To keep the plant clean and shaped, cut back some of the new growth that comes out as it grows. Once the plant goes dormant however, one would think that there is no need to prune anymore. That is not the case! When there are no longer any leaves on the trees and shrubs, you can easily see up into the plants. This inspection may reveal a very thick and densely branched tree or shrub. In most cases, this is not an ideal growth habit for the plant. Thinning to reduce that density of the branches will help the overall health of the tree or shrub. Another benefit that dormant season pruning has for you is that the debris that you create from the pruning is substantially less because there are no leaves to worry about. In some cases, this translates to a lower cost to have a professional do the job. Less debris means less for them to haul away. Winter Landscaping Tip #2 – Perennial Cut BackAnother type of plant that benefits from pruning are perennials. As freezing temperatures hit, most Spring, Summer and Fall blooming perennials begin to store their energy for the Winter down in their root system. The result is a brown plant on top. You could leave these ugly, brown remnants of the perennial in your landscape, but that isn't very visually appealing. Also, having a lot of dead foliage in your garden provides great places for rodents to hide and feed on the root system of your plants. The best thing to do is to cut back the foliage remnants of your perennials. Your final result will be plants cut to a few inches above ground level. Winter Landscaping Tip #3 – Fertilization of Trees and ShrubsGiving your trees and shrubs the proper nutrition is vital to the success of their growth and structure. With a low amount of nutrition in the soil, many plants will struggle to stay healthy. Plants will lack the proper color foliage and have limited blooms. Additionally, having a stressed tree or shrubs increases the chance of disease or insect infestations. There are two main type of fertilization that can be done in the Fall that help the landscape. A liquid fertilization can be performed around the drip line of a tree or shrub and instantly puts the nutrients into the soil. A granular fertilization is also placed around the drip line of the tree or shrub and the product will slowly dissolve into the soil. Either option is a good choice for the Fall. The vital nutrients that are in the fertilizers will remain in the soil until the Spring time. This means these nutrients are ready be there to be taken up once the plant emerges from Winter. Fertilization can be done in the Spring time for trees and shrubs too, but it can take some time in order for nutrients to be absorbed. So, having the greatest impact starting the Spring season off would be a Fall fertilization. Winter Landscaping Tip #4 – Fall PlantingOnce you have gone through your landscape pruning your trees and shrubs, cutting back your perennials, and fertilized the beds, you may begin to starting thinking about what next Spring could bring and what you could do now to fill in a few areas that just seem to be missing something. A good thing to do in the fall is planting of perennials, trees and shrubs.
Also, when planting in the Fall make sure to provide your new and existing plants with a good layer of mulch to help insulate the soil. This practice helps reduce the chance of heaving from the alternating freezing and thawing of the ground.
Being outside in late Fall weather may not always be pleasant, but making sure your trees and shrubs are protected from the potential damages of the Winter are necessary. Making sure you tackle each of these steps above will help to ensure that your landscape is properly protected this Winter. I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays and got to spend time with friends and family. Your gift from the government was a shutdown. This week's a little slower because of the holidays. But, we did get some housing data. Let's dive in! Headline NewsS&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller HPIHome prices in October were up 0.4% on a seasonally-adjusted basis as expected. Prices were flat overall on the month. Home prices have gone up 5% for the year. The Northeast is hot with Boston and New York both seeing home prices rise 0.7% on the month. The West is starting to cool. Seattle was down 0.3%, while Portland and Denver were up 0.2% on the month, exhibiting slower growth. Las Vegas was up 0.8% on the month and has risen 12.8% on the year, while San Francisco is a 7.9% annually. Washington and New York City trail, up 2.9% and 3.1% respectively. Monthly revisions were mixed with the index showing up 0.7% in October and down 0.2% in August. FHFA House Price IndexThe Federal Housing Finance Agency saw a gain in home prices of 0.3% for a 5.7% year-on-year rate. However, this is still a 2-1/2 year low. Prices in the Mountain region are still reporting strong at a nearly double-digit yearly gain, while prices in New England, the Mid-Atlantic and the West South Central had weak reports where appreciation is in the low- to mid-single digits. New Home SalesWith the continuing federal government shutdown, there wasn't much in this report. While rates were weak in October, November has had a bounce back to 560,000 in new home sales. Jobless ClaimsInitial jobless claims were down 1,000 to 216,000 last week. This brought the four-week average down to 4,750 to 218,000, down for the third straight week. Continuing-unemployment claims were down 4,000 to 1.676 million, while the 4-week moving average was down to 1.676 million. Consumer ConfidenceConsumer confidence fell 8.3 points to come in at 128.1 in December. While the points continue to show the lowest numbers since July, it's good news for jobless claims as December shows strength in the employment rate. Taking a look at current conditions, 1% fewer consumers see jobs as hard to get, bringing the total to 11.6%. Consumers who expect more jobs in the months ahead decreased to 16.6%. Inflation expectations were down to a 4.3% level, which is low for this report. There are also reports of the Federal Reserve policymakers planning a couple more rate hikes in the coming year to stem the risk of inflation. International TradeSimilar to new home sales, there wasn't much of a report with international trade, but the U.S. trade deficit decreased to $75.7 billion from $77 billion in October. There was a 0.6% downturn in exports and a 0.1% rise in imports. Pending Home SalesHomes with a purchase agreement in place for sale was down 0.7% to an index level of 101.4 in the month of November. Looking at regional data, pending sales were weakest in both the South and Midwest balancing out the slight gain in the Northeast and West. Mortgage RatesAs of this writing, the federal government remains shut down. Since our last Market Update, there doesn't seem to be any changes regarding FHA, USDA or VA loan applications, although Quicken Loans will continue to accept these loan applications. Ending the year on a high note, mortgage rates dropped last week, making it as good a time as any to lock your interest rate if you're in the market to purchase or refinance. The average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage with 0.5 points paid in fees was down to 4.55%. This is up from 3.99% at the same time a year ago. In shorter terms, the average rate for a 15-year fixed mortgage was 4.01% with 0.4 points paid. This is a slight change from last week and up from 3.44% last year. Finally, the average rate on a 5-year treasury-indexed adjustable rate mortgage (ARM) with 0.3 points was 4%. This has risen from 3.47% at this time in 2017. Stock MarketThings are looking up for the stock market, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 250 points. The S&P 500 also had a good day and gained 0.9%. The Nasdaq continues to rise from last week at 1.1%. While the optimism surrounding the U.S.-China trade is to credit for the higher numbers, they were still down at least 4.8% year to date through Friday's close, their worst annual performance since 2008. However, there are talks of future climbs in stocks in 2019. Our Fantasy Stock League will end with the close of today's stock trading. ![]() Use watering globes to water your houseplants while you are on vacation. How often should you water your houseplants?Over-watering is one of the most common causes of houseplant death. If you're not sure how much to water, it's better to err on the dry side than to give your plants too much moisture. Too much water will cause root rot, which is irreversible. All houseplants have slightly different watering requirements so it's best to water on an as-needed basis rather than by a set calendar schedule. In general, plants grown in well-drained soil in an appropriate-size container should be watered when the top 1/2 to 1 inch of soil feels dry. Most houseplants would prefer being slightly dry than soaking wet. Think about the plant's natural environment and try to recreate it in your home. Try to water houseplants the way they would get moisture in their natural environments. Some plants need a period of dry soil for days or weeks. Others houseplants need more regular watering, with the soil allowed to dry between each drink. Still others prefer consistently moist soil. Mist HouseplantsMisting with a spray bottle is also helpful for houseplants. A light misting once or twice a day is usually beneficial. Remember that we're trying to duplicate the natural environment for these plants, and that means humidity and misting for tropical plants. Consider placing these houseplants in your bathroom. These plants will love the extra moisture and humidity from your daily shower. Placing a tray underneath the potted plant's container is the best way to catch that excess water and prevent a mess. The natural environment for cacti and succulents is a dry, desert climate, so obviously you shouldn't be watering them as much as you would a tropical plant. Let these types of plants dry out completely between watering and only water as little as necessary. Keep these plants out of the bathroom. You may also like: How to Water Houseplants While Away How much light do houseplants need?Houseplants typically require:
Plants will either require bright or direct light (sunlight from a south-facing window) or indirect or filtered light (sunlight through a curtain or light from a bulb). When plants don't get the light they need, they won't necessarily die, but they will stop producing new growth. Grow lights for house plantsIf you place your houseplants in a room that doesn't get a lot of natural light or you live in an area that gets dark early in the winter you may need to invest in a few grow lights to keep your plants happy and healthy. In order to grow, plants need:
You don't need to spend a fortune on expensive grow lights.Fluorescent lights are by far the most economical and easy choice for houseplants. They come in tubes or compact bulbs (CFL) that screw into regular lamp sockets, and they're cool enough to put close to plant foliage. Generic fluorescent tubes and bulbs are higher in blue wavelengths, so look for “full-spectrum” or include a mix of “cool” and “warm” bulbs. When in doubt, buy “cool white” products, since white light contains the full spectrum of wavelengths. For maximum effect, position fluorescent bulbs about a foot away from plant foliage. Try this easy method to add light for plants in a room with low natural light:

If the roots are circling the inside of the container, it may be time to re-pot the plant. When the plant has outgrown its pot you can transplant it into a slightly larger container. If you'd like to keep it in the same pot, trim off some of the roots with a sharp knife and replant it into the container using fresh potting soil. When you are putting it into a new pot, only transplant it into a pot that is one size larger. Spring and summer are the best seasons for re-potting your houseplants. As you re-pot your houseplants, it's also a good time to divide those with multiple stems to get new plants. We will go over different methods of propagation in a moment. What type of soil should you use to re-pot houseplants? The best growing media for houseplants is actually soil-less and is a combination of equal parts peat moss, vermiculite/ perlite, and compost. Orchids are notoriously picky with their potting medium. There aren't as many “one size fits all” options for orchid growing media, but a good combination for orchids is a well-drained mixture with plenty of room for the roots to breathe. When you go to the garden center to purchase new “soil” (growing media) look at the packaging to find best variety for your particular plant. It should say what plant the soil will work best for, like orchids or cacti. Repotting cactiRepotting a cactus can be tricky. Make sure you protect yourself by wearing thick gloves. An easy trick to help avoid getting poked is to wrap the spiky part of the cactus up in newspaper while you move it to a new pot. Cacti are slow growing so you should only need to re-pot it every two or three years. Houseplant PropagationThere are three main ways to propagate your house plants:
You may also like: How to Propagate Herbs ![]() Indoor herbs make great houseplants How to Bring a Dying Plant Back to LifeIf your plant looks like it has seen better days, don't stress. There are things you can do to help save your beloved houseplant before it is too far gone. Dead leaves, stems, & branches must go. Use a pair of scissors or shears to trim away any dead leaves from the plant, then trim away all dead branches. Getting rid of anything dead will help the plant focus its energy on new growth. Check light and humidity conditions. Make sure that sunlight is coming in direct contact with your plant, but not more than it needs. Make sure you are not over watering or under watering your plant. See the guidelines above for how much water you should be giving your plants. Remember: over watering is the most common cause of plant death. ![]() Houseplants with crochet cozies on the pots How do you maintain indoor plants?Almost all houseplants look better with regular grooming. Part of houseplant care is maintaining your plants to keep them lush and healthy. Dust collects on leaves, so wash them with a gentle shower of room-temperature water or dust them with a soft brush if the plants have hairy leaves. This improves the plant's appearance and keeps the leaf pores unobstructed so that the plant gets more light. The main reason for pruning houseplants is to make them look better. If one of your plants has a branch that's too long, cut it back to a side shoot or main stem. Also remove any dead or diseased leaves and stems to help prevent the problem from spreading. Rejuvenate overgrown houseplants by cutting them back to 4 to 6 inches tall. This technique is effective in encouraging new growth for trailing plants such as Swedish ivy and pothos that may have become bare at their bases. Pinching means you remove stem tips, either with your fingernails or pruners. Pinch out the tip of a stem and the topmost leaves to promote growth of side buds. Plants that grow rapidly often look best with frequent pinching to keep them compact and bushy. Trim faded flowers from your plants to keep the plant blooming and help prevent disease problems. While you're at it, be sure to remove yellow, brown, or withered leaves. Use a narrow-blade hand pruner or sharp scissors to make a clean cut without tearing the plant's stem. Remove and destroy diseased houseplants or affected leaves or stems as they develop to prevent spread of the disease. Some diseases spread by insects, so keeping the insect population in check helps prevent disease problems. ![]() Pothos Houseplant Care Fertilizer for houseplantsLike watering, there isn't an easy guideline to know how much to fertilize. It depends on plant's growth rate and age, and the time of year. Avoid feeding houseplants when they're not actively growing or if they are stressed. Most houseplants put on a growth spurt in spring and summer. This is the best time to fertilize them. During the short days of fall and winter, most houseplants go through a dormant period and need little, if any, fertilizer. Follow label directions to know how much plant food to use. Fertilizers come in a broad array of formulations, and it's important to avoid over-fertilizing your houseplants. Too much fertilizer can burn their roots and stunt their growth. For flowering varieties, use a fertilizer in which the three numbers on the label (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, respectively) are relatively equal. If the nitrogen content is too high, the plant may grow a lot of leaves, but few flowers. ![]() Houseplant care in the dining room. Pest Control for Indoor PlantsSeveral insects commonly attack houseplants. Insecticidal soap is an easy-to-use, effective treatment for most soft-bodied pests such as aphids and spider mites. A forceful spray of water from the hose may knock down the population of these pests, too. Rubbing alcohol is effective on insects with waxy coatings such as scale and mealybugs. An all-natural way to help prevent and get rid of pests is to use a solution that contains neem oil. Dust and grime can also attract and harbor spider mites and other insect pests. Wash smooth-leaved houseplants with a moist, soft cloth and some insecticidal soap, such as Neem Oil Spray. For plants with many small leaves, use a hand sprayer or sink sprayer to douse them with water. No matter what treatment you use, be consistent. For fast-reproducing pests such as aphids and spider mites, you may need to treat plants once a week for a month to be rid of the pests. Fungus gnats are tiny black flies that buzz around the soil; they're often confused with fruit flies. You typically see fungus gnats in large numbers when plants are over-watered. Allow the soil surface to dry between waterings. Whether you are a beginner plantsman or a more experienced home botanist, collecting houseplants can be a fun and rewarding hobby. Pest control in the winter? Absolutely! Pest control isn't just something you should have during the summer months. Pests can be a serious problem all year long. In fact, some pests become more of an indoor problem when temperatures outside become undesirable. Let's take a look. RodentsWe have many species of rodents in Tennessee. The most common are mice, Norway rats, and roof rats. These critters can get into your home during any part of the year, but dropping temperatures and a reduction of food options gives them even more reason to come inside. When they do, they can spread harmful bacteria and diseases. They can contaminate stored foods, dishes, silverware, food-prep surfaces, and more. As they explore your home from top to bottom, they can spread parasites around as well. Flea and tick infestations are commonly linked to rodent infestations. These secondary pests bring with them their own list of diseases. Rodents don't just enter homes during the warm months. They can get in any time of the year. SpidersCommon house spiders become even more common when the cold temperatures of fall arrive. While spiders have the ability to create a sort of antifreeze that protects them from freezing to death, most of the food they eat doesn't have this ability. When their food goes inside, the follow. So, when you see overwintering insects during the cold winter months, don't be surprised to see those spiders too. AntsMost ants in Tennessee disappear during the winter months. They hide in their nests underground and wait for conditions outside to become favorable again. But, when an ant species as established itself inside a home, where it is warm, they can be active all winter long. This is especially true of carpenter ants because carpenter ants are much more likely to create a nest inside a man-made structure than other species of ant are. When they do, they can weaken the wood they inhabit. This can be bad news for a property owner looking to protect their equity. Year-Round Pest Control is the Way to GoTennessee pests have a way of getting into our homes and causing trouble all year. The best way to keep them out and reduce the threats they can pose is to have a licensed and experienced service professional apply appropriate treatments in each season and guide you in steps you can take to reduce the impact pests can have on your health and your property. If you need help with this, remember, the team at All-American Pest Control is always available to assist you. |
